‘Choco-tea’ has been mentioned in the witty ninjakitty blog many times of late, and Thea is the reason why. Every Friday afternoon Boo and I meet at Thea to sample some of their mysterious vegetarian delights and heavenly tea. Possibly the best accidental discovery I’ve made to date, Thea is a secret treasure in the heart of downtown Adelaide. A tranquil vegan-friendly restaurant in Taiwanese flavours, comfortable to visit on your own or with a large group of friends.
My personal favourite a is glass of hot honey green or mango-green tea; since Delana and James descovered the magic of chocolate green tea (sounds bizarre, tastes amazing!) I find there are just too many choices! Sweet & Sour Thing has to be one of the modern delicacies of the civilised world, and at under $10 your wallet has room for some lotus buns or yam samosas, even if your belly doesn’t.
Thea can be found at 110 Gawler Place in what was once The Open Book (head down Rundle Mall until you reach the strange modern rotunda, scoot up Gawler place, past Glow and the million other lunch joints until you pass Known Space Books, they are right next door). The restaurant spans two levels, with comfy couches and an ornamental rock garden downstairs. The staff are the very definition of kawaii (a Japanese term for a distinct level of cuteness) in their uniforms, and if you are lucky you’ll be treated to a sample of exotic tea served in traditional sipping cups.
Thea’s only downside is their limited open hours – Monday to Thursday from 11 – 4ish, and Fridays from 11am to 8pm.
